They’re all just tools

select-cooking-utensilsI enjoy cooking. No, I mean it, I really enjoy cooking and I have no problem taking a solid recipe, and given the correct ingredients and tools, transforming it into something special. Did I mention I enjoy cooking? I think I did. What I failed to mention was up until about 14 years ago, I dreaded cooking. Wait, huh? That’s right. What I mean to say is while I enjoyed the act of cooking, I found the process arduous and a major pain in the backside.

The year was 2001, and other than the standard mix and match dishes, flatware, and a dozen souvenir plastic cups, my kitchen consisted of a few hand me down pots and pans, a skillet, a couple of wooden spoons, a spatula, one paring knife, and four steak knives. Yeah, pretty pathetic, I know. I kept telling myself, I learned to cook using a meager tool set, so this was all I needed.

Well, one day while trying to bone a chicken with my trusty 3-inch paring knife, I came to the conclusion that if I was ever going to rekindle my love of cooking, I needed to get serious and improve the tools I was using.

Over the next few months, I added a stock pot, sauté pan, box grater, vegetable peeler, cutting board, and a chef’s knife. After Christmas and a couple of birthdays, I was working with a serious set of tools. And, for the first time, I really enjoyed cooking, the process and all.

I could have continued cooking with the most basic or tool, but it was amazing how much easier things got when I had the correct tools.

So, what does this have to do with running a small business you ask? Well, just like having the correct tools made my cooking easier and more enjoyable, the right business tools can make running your business easier and a lot more enjoyable.

You can run a very successful business without a web presence, or accounting software, or even computers, but in this day and age, do you really want to? Technology is just another tool you have at your disposal to make doing business easier and more productive.

A major tool you can add to your kit is a modern website. To get the most from your website, it should be fully responsive and mobile ready. With global sales of smart devices outpacing those of laptops and desktop computers, finding ways to monetize and profit from the surge in mobile device sales is becoming a priority for the small business sector.

The volume of transactions made via mobile devices will will climb from $163 billion in 2012 to $721 billion in 2017, according to Gartner. As a result, companies are actively pursuing methods to facilitate mobile payments for their customers. They’re aiming to deliver mobile content to raise awareness of their business, leverage location-based services to engage their customer base, and harness the massive amount of spending generated through mobile device adoption.

More than one-fifth of worldwide payment transactions now occur on a mobile device, according to the Adyen Global Mobile Payments Index. This represents a huge opportunity to increase revenue and reach out to a wider customer base by capitalizing on mobile devices.

You might be thinking, “What can I do?”: Consider optimizing your business’ website for mobile devices to ensure the website displays properly on smaller screens and that customers can complete purchases, contact staff for service or support, and maintain personalized accounts through their mobile devices.

Having a technology tool kit is just the start; you need to keep these tools clean and working efficiently. If you’ve been running your business using the same tools for years, maybe it is time to upgrade your tool kit and make your business life just a little easier.

See if replacing your static, brochure ware website with a fully responsive, mobile ready, e-commerce system might be in order. Or, maybe, you add a few new tools to your kit, like a mobile app to help keep your brand and products in your customer’s pocket 24/7 or implement a new in-house process to streamline the way you do things.

Tools can be a wonderful addition to running your business, but using the right tools will make things even easier and enjoyable.
